Abstract

<PICT:0791338/III/1> A continuous process for the steam distillation of one or more components of a material comprises atomizing the material in a fine and regular form by means of superheated steam in which the material and the steam are introduced simultaneously through the same means into the atmosphere of steam under reduced pressure, thus assuring that all of the material comes in contact with the superheated steam. The process is particularly applicable to the deodorization of oils and to the steam refining of oils and fats of low acidity. A preferred plant for carrying out the invention comprises a supply tank 1 and a proportioning device 2 associated with a vacuum de-aerator 3 from which a pipe 7 leads to a heat exchanger 4. A pipe 17 having a flow regulating device leads the material to a nozzle 19 which may cooperate with a heater 20 in a vacuum chamber 21 fitted with baffles 22. Steam supplied from a superheater 29 is also fed to nozzle 19 and the steam and the material to be treated mixed. Chamber 21 is connected through pipe 43 to condensation units 44 fitted with a jacket 45 and pipe 55 leads to a condenser 56 fitted with a barometric column 57 which terminates in a tank 58.
