791,208. Ammunition. HUCK, R. Aug. 31, 1956 [Aug. 31, 1955], No. 26706/56. Class 9(1) A blank cartridge 1 comprising a tapered metal case 2 with a shoulder 5 merging into a cylindrical grooved neck 6 has a bullet-shaped head 9 with a frusto-conical skirt 10 fitted over the neck 6, so that when the cartridge is inserted in a gun the skirt 10 is pressed by the shoulder 5 against the shoulder 14 of the gun chamber. The interior of the head 9 has grooves matching the grooves of the neck 6 and the exterior has a shoulder 11 which does not bear against the inner surface of the gun. Within the head is a plug 17 of felt or similar material and the case 2 contains a charge 18 which when fired drives the plug 17 through the bullet nose 15, which is weakened by grooves 16. The head 9 may be formed from synthetic plastic materials such as polythene or polyvinyl chloride. Asbestos, cardboard, vulcanized fibre or light metals are alternative materials. The case 2 may be made of brass, steel, copper or copper-zinc alloys. In a modification, the case is provided with a bevelled rim above which is a groove for engagement with the extractor. The felt wad is placed over the charge in the case and the neck of the case has an annular ridge for engagement within the bullet-head. Instead of ridge and groove connection between the head and the case adhesive may be used to secure them together.
