Abstract
791,066. Spray-producers. SOC. PROTECTAL. Oct. 21, 1955 [Oct. 22, 1954], No. 30170/55. Class 69(3). A gun for projecting molten plastic material by relatively low pressure hot air includes a reservoir 3 detachably fixed to a spray head 2 supporting an electric resistance heater 13 which heats the plastic material as well as atomizing air which is passed through it. The heater includes a closed cylindrical jacket, Figs. 4 and 5, housing resistors 18 which extend through baffles 17. Cold air is fed through a pipe 25, Fig. 5, to the head and flows through a tube 21 to the bottom of the heater; it then flows zig-zag fashion through the heater and into a passage 28, Figs. 3, 5 and 6. A safety valve 31 is arranged at one end of the passage 28 and at the other end a bore 32 leads to a spray nozzle and is controlled by a screw 65. Some of the heated air passes into the reservoir via a valve 58, and forces the heated material through a tube 52, Fig. 4, and bores 51, 41 to the spray nozzle. Liquid flow from the nozzle is controlled by a trigger-operated rod 42. A further portion of the hot air fed to the passage 28 flows via a valve 61 through a looped tube 63 depending into the reservoir to effect additional heating of the material. The hot air passes through the tube 63 and is returned to the passage 28. An adjustable thermostat controls the material temperature indicated by a thermometer, and a manometer indicates the hot air pressure. The electric conductors supplying the heater pass through the air supply pipe 25. Two reservoirs and nozzles may be fitted to the gun head, one reservoir containing paint and the other a hardening product, and the two nozzles may simultaneously emit the two substances. An electrostatic emitter may be associated with the gun in order to charge the sprayed particles.
