Abstract
Alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons are dealkylated in the presence of hydrogen and in the presence of a catalytically inert finely divided solid at 1100-1600 DEG F., 400-1000 p.s.i.g. and 2-120 seconds by heating the vaporized hydrocarbon and hydrogen, entraining the solid, heated to a higher temperature than the gaseous mixture, to form a disperse phase having a solids density of 2-20 pounds per cubic foot which is passed through an elongated reaction zone preferably having a length/diameter ratio of 10-120:1. The feed stock may be toluene, xylenes, ethyl benzene, mesitylene, methyl naphthalenes, dimethyl naphthalenes methylethyl naphthalenes and trimethyl naphthalenes. The solid which may be alpha alumina, quartz, carborundum or mullite, and the particle size is preferably 100-400 mesh (American Mesh Standard). The amount of hydrogen is in the range 2000-10,000 standard cubic feet per barrel of aromatic hydrocarbon.
