Abstract
Plastic sheeting, e.g. of polyvinyl butyral, is coloured by first stretching it in both directions, then attaching it to a rigid frame having the desired contour of the finished sheet, trimming the edges to conform to the contour of the frame, dipping it in a dye solution and finally rinsing and drying. When opposite edges only of the sheet are to be coloured, one edge of the sheet is first dipped in the dye solution, the frame is then inverted and the opposite edge is so immersed. The dyebath preferably is maintained at 72-78 DEG F. and comprises aqueous dioxane containing a non-ionic agent such as a polyoxyethylene ester of mixed fatty and resin acids, a water-insoluble but aqueous dioxane-soluble dyestuff and, as a stabilizer, morpholine. Immediately prior to dyeing, the surface of the bath is skimmed to remove dust particles. The coloured sheeting may be employed as an interlayer in laminated safety glass. Apparatus for effecting the process is described.
