Abstract
790,401. Mechanical presses. HORDERN, MASON & EDWARDS, Ltd. Dec. 7, 1954 [Dec. 7, 1953], No. 33912/53. Class 87(2). A cam, eccentric, or, as shown, crankoperated press has rotatable screw-threaded parts in the connecting rod and ram assembly to allow the throw of the ram to be adjusted. As shown, the upper part 19 of the connecting rod is internallv screw-threaded to receive the part 21 which is connected by a ball 16 and socket 17, 18 joint to the ram 13. The length of the connecting rod is adjusted by rotating the shank of the ball 16 through a transmission 27, 25, 33, Fig. 3, 34. The extensible shaft 34 may be driven by a motor 22, but the spindle 33 may also be rotated manually by a hand-wheel 55, for making small adjustments. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the motor 22 may be dispensed with and the shaft 34 rotated by a hand wheel. The housing 26 containing the gear wheel 27 moves in a slot 30 in a rear web 31 of the ram. An indicator 41 is driven from the spindle 33 by gears 45, 46 to indicate, e.g., the distance of the ram from a given datum position. Limit switches mounted in a casing 50 and actuated by a rod 51, Fig. 5 (not shown), may be provided to control the motor 22 and to thus limit the extent to which the ram may be adjusted. The motor 22 is fixed to one or both side plates 11 and is so arranged that the output shaft 24 is horizontal when the ram is adjusted to its mid position. The position of the motor forms the subject-matter of Specification 790,402. The ram may be mounted in slides 14.
