790,225. Automatic gain control. PYE, Ltd. Dec. 16, 1955 [Dec. 15, 1954], No. 36301/54. Class 40 (5). In a television receiver with automatic gain control of the " gated " type, the gain of the video channel is reduced until the H.T. efficiency diode comes into operation. In an arrangement as described in Specification 777,801, in which pulses produced by a sampling diode V1 are amplified by a valve V2 and rectified by a diode V3 and form, after smoothing, the A.G.C. potential, a resistor R3 and rectifier M1 are connected in series between the anode of the diode V3 and earth. The anode of rectifier M1 is connected by one resistor R1, to the line output transformer T1 and by another resistor R2 to a source of negative potential; until the efficiency diode V5 becomes operative, the rectifier M1 is biased so as to be non-conductive and a negative bias is applied to the A.G.C. line via resistor R3. Overload before the A.G.C. is operative is thereby prevented. The negative potential may be derived from the grid circuit of the line output valve V4 or alternatively (Fig. 1, not shown) from the sound A.G.C. circuit. Alternatively, or in addition, the screen grids of valves in the video channel may be fed via a potentiometer from the boost voltage.
