Abstract

<PICT:0790170/III/1> 11-amino-undecanoic acid is polymerized in a continuous process using an aqueous starting material containing 50 to 60 per cent by weight of the monomer, to which water is added at ordinary temperature, the resultant aqueous suspension being subjected continuously to rapid evaporation at a temperature higher than the melting point of the monomer at ordinary pressure to eliminate substantially all the water in less than 15 minutes, the product being polymerized by passage through a reaction zone heated to polymerization temperature. 11-amino-undecanoic acid paste is charged discontinuously into a mixing vessel 10 by inlet 12, water added through 13 and stirring effected using the agitator 14, the slurry being fed to the evaporator 20 and atomized by the rotating diffuser 24 which projects the resultant particles against the heating bodies 25, and then into the polymerization apparatus 28. Stabilizers, e.g. aluminium stearate and delustreing agents, e.g. titanium dioxide, may be present in the starting material.ALSO:<PICT:0790170/IV (a)/1> 11-Amino-undecanoic acid is polymerized in a continuous process using an aqueous starting material containing 50 to 60 per cent by weight of the monomer, to which water is added at ordinary temperature, the resultant aqueous suspension being subjected continuously to rapid evaporation at a temperature higher than the melting-point of the monomer at ordinary pressure to eliminate substantially all the water in less than 15 minutes, the product being polymerized by passage through a reaction zone heated to polymerization temperature.
