Abstract
Polyacetals having molecular weights of up to 10,000 are made by effecting a polyaddition reaction between a divinyl ether and a dihydroxy compound or a dimercaptan. Reaction is effected in acid medium and at the end of the reaction the catalyst is neutralized. Specified dihydroxy compounds are ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, propanediol, trimethylene glycol, butanediol, hexanediol, decanediol, resorcinol and diphenylolpropane. Divinyl ethers specified are those of the above dihydroxy compound. The specified dimercaptan is hexamethylene dimercaptan. Cross-linked products may be produced by adding glycerine, pentaerythritol or sugar alcohols to the reaction mixture. The polyectals are useful as greases, lubricants, textile assistants, adhesives or plasticizers. In examples polyacetals are made from (1)-(4), (6), (8) and (9) diethylene glycol divinyl ether and diethylene glycol, 1.4-butane diol, ethylene glycol or hexamethylene dimercaptan; (5) ethylene glycol divinyl ether and diethylene glycol; (7) trimethylene glycol divinyl ether and 1.4-butanediol; (10) ethylene glycol divinyl ether and 4.4-dihydroxydiphenyl dimethyl methane.
