Abstract

High carbon ferro-chromium is decarburized by heating a charge comprising finely divided high carbon ferro-chromium and finely divided chromite ore under subatmospheric pressure at a temperature high enough to oxidize the carbon of the high carbon ferro-chromium and removing the oxide of carbon formed. The high carbon ferro-chromium may contain 6-8 per cent carbon which may be reduced by the process to 0.01 per cent. The chromite ore may be used raw or may be heat treated e.g. roasted or sintered. The ferro-chromium and the chromite ore may be ground to pass a 200 mesh sieve and thoroughly mixed before being formed into briquettes with a binder, e.g. dextrin or sulphite liquor. The briquettes may be dried and then heated in a vacuum, e.g. 110 microns, until there is no further reaction between carbon and oxygen. Slag forming materials may be present and the briquettes may include a catalyst e.g. fluorspar. The low carbon ferro-chromium produced may be used as an addition in the manufacture of chromium steels.
