Abstract
<PICT:0788475/III/1> Synthetic alcohols produced by the catalytic hydration of mono-olefins are purified by a three-stage distillation process comprising (i) subjecting the crude alcohol to fractional distillation to remove low-boiling impurities including all the ether, (ii) eliminating malodorous impurities such as polymer oils by submitting the alcohol to water-extractive distillation, (iii) rectifying the aqueous alcohol withdrawn as bottoms from the base of the extractive distillation column, whereby concentrated and odourless alcohol of high-purity is obtained. In an example, crude ethanol containing 58 per cent ethanol, 7.5 per cent diethyl ether, 0.5 per cent polymer oils and 34 per cent water, is heated to 200 DEG F. in preheater 1 and fed to 40-plate column 3. This column is operated at a pressure of 15 p.s.i.g., and is heated by live steam, introduced through line 4, to maintain a base-temperature of 210 DEG F. and a head-temperature of 125-130 DEG F. The distillate obtained at the top of the column is predominantly ether; this is divided into two streams, one of which is returned to the column as reflux, while the other is withdrawn from the system via line 9. Some of the more volatile polymer oil impurities accumulate in column 3 slightly above the feed, and are withdrawn via line 10. Dilute alcohol is withdrawn from the base of column 3, and is passed via cooler 12 to decanter 13, where it is diluted with water to adjust the concentration to about 30-45 per cent EtOH. Hydrocarbon oil impurities become insoluble and settle out as an upper layer, which is removed through line 14. The aqueous alcohol is pumped through line 17 into 45-plate column 18 where extractive distillation is effected, steam being introduced into the base of the column via line 20, and water being fed into the top of the column through line 19. The distillate is passed to decanter 24 where the oil impurities form an upper phase, which is withdrawn via line 25. The lower aqueous phase may be returned to column 18 as reflux, or it may be partially or wholly withdrawn through line 27. The bottoms stream from column 18, which contains 3 to 20 per cent EtOH, is pumped to 65-plate column 31, where the alcohol is rectified. Refined and concentrated alcohol is withdrawn from the system via line 37 or line 40. Heavy oils are withdrawn from column 31 through side-connections 38. The water withdrawn from the base of column 31 may, if desired, be partially or totally recycled to column 18.
