Abstract
Steel containing 1.5 to 5 per cent Si, 0.5 to 5 per cent Al, the combined contents of Si and Al lying between 2 and 72, and optionally minor amounts of Mn, Ni, Cr, W, Ti, P, B, S, the balance being Fe, is coated with Al by applying an Al paint having a volatile binder. The paint is applied uniformly after cleaning and polishing the steel surface, to provide at least 1 mgm. of Al per sq. cm. of surface, and after low temperature drying is heated at 350 DEG C. to drive off the binder.ALSO:Surfaces (according to the Provisional Specification, of heat exchangers, combustion chambers, furnaces, flues) highly resistant to oxidation at elevated temperatures are made by coating with Al an alloy containing 1.5 to 5 per cent Si, 0.5 to 5 per cent Al - the combined contents of Si and Al lying between 2 and 7 per cent - 0.05 to 0.35 per cent C. and optionally one or more of Mn up to 3 per cent, Ni up to 5 per cent, Cr up to 2 per cent, W up to 1 per cent, Ti up to 1 per cent, P up to 0.04 per cent, B. up to 0.01 per cent, S. up to 0.03 per cent in absence of Mn or up to 0.05 per cent in presence of a balanced Mn content; the remainder being Fe apart from unavoidable impurities. The Al coating may be applied to the cleaned steel surface by painting with an Al paint having a volatile binder and heating to drive off the binder, the Al layer being at least 1 mgm. per sq. cm. of surface. It may also be applied by the rolling on of an Al foil, by hot dipping, by electroplating or by spraying; in this last case the surface should first be roughened by abrasive blasting. The surfaces are said to be especially resistant to hot sulphur-containing flue gases.
