788,097. Transporting solids in a liquid stream. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS), Ltd. Nov. 26, 1954 [Aug. 27, 1953], No. 23702/53. Class 102(2). [Also in Group XXXV] In a system for transporting coal in a stream of water, the speed of the water pump is automatically varied to maintain the concentration of coal in the stream constant, and if the pump reaches maximum output the coal input is reduced to prevent choking. The coal is carried from a feeder 19, Fig. 1, to a separator 13 along a duct 10 by water circulated by an electric pump 17. The concentration of coal is detected at 32 by comparing the rate of flow in the duct with the pressure in the duct. An equation for the relationship between the three factors is given. The rate of flow is measured, Fig. 2 (not shown) by a differential diaphragm responsive to the pressure change across a venturi tube included in a vertical section of the duct 10, the diaphragm actuating the slider of a rheostat and the pressure in the duct is similarly detected. The two rheostats control the speeds of a pair of motors which adjust a cam which actuates a rheostat providing an output signal corresponding to the concentration. This signal is applied to an undisclosed device 28 which controls the speed of the electric pump 17. The output of the pump is detected by its motor current and when this reaches a predetermined maximum a signal is sent by undisclosed apparatus to an undisclosed unit 23 which reduces the speed of the motor 20 driving the coal feeder.
