Abstract
788,086. Amusement apparatus. JOSEPH, Sir L. Dec. 22, 1955, No. 36839/55. Class 132(1) An observation tower comprises a vertical tower structure and an annular lift cage arranged externally of and coaxially with the tower so that it may be moved up and down, the cage having an observation car for passengers and either the lift cage or the car being adapted to be rotated about the vertical axis of the structure. As shown, tower 1 comprises a square framework of vertical members 2, e.g. channel section girders or tubular elements, inter-connected by horizontal stays 3 with diagonal bracing and rests on a concrete foundation 5 with a well 6 to accommodate the necessary hoisting machinery. The lift cage 7 has a square centre opening to fit the tower and is raised and lowered by wire ropes 8 passing over sheaves 9 at the top of the tower and down to a winding drum 10 driven through reduction gearing by motor 11. Cage 7 has a horizontal platform 12 for a car 13 mounted on rollers 14 carried by a ring 15, the rollers 14 engaging tracks 16 and 17 on platform 12 and car 13 respectively.
