Abstract
The invention comprises the compound 1,1,5,5 - tetraphenyl - 1,3,3,5 - tetramethyltrisiloxane, useful as a vacuum diffusion pump fluid. It is best prepared by reacting diphenylmethylsilanol with dimethyldichlorosilane at a temperature below 100 DEG C. in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor such as pyridine in amount at least sufficient to react with all the hydrogen chloride produced. Less satisfactory methods of preparing the compound include: (1) cohydrolysis of the corresponding chlorosilanes; (2) catalytic copolymerization of tetraphenyldimethyldisiloxane and dimethylsiloxane; and (3) reaction of the sodium salt of diphenylmethylsilanol with dimethyldichlorosilane.
