Abstract
An unsaturated polyester is the reaction product of (1) a glycol (e.g. ethylene-, diethylene-or propylene-glycol); (2) maleic acid or anhydride; and (3) hexahydrophthalic acid or anhydride; the maleic and hexahydrophthalic acids being present in the molar ratio of 0.6:0.4 to 0.4:0.6. The polyester may be copolymerized with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, e.g. styrene or vinyl toluene (o-, m-, or p- or a mixture thereof. In an example, a polyester is made by heating a mixture of 1:2-propylene glycol and hexahydrophthalic acid to 100 DEG C., adding maleic anhydride and continuing the heating at 170-200 DEG C., to produce a resin of acid number 10-60. Later hydroquinone, styrene and methyl ketone peroxide were added, the mixture poured into a mould and the resin cured by heating to 70-110 DEG C.
