Abstract
786,779. Locks. BACKHOUSE, H T. Nov. 16, 1955 [Nov. 25, 1954], No. 34230/54. Class 44 Relates to locks of the kind comprising in combination a bolt or catch normally held in a latching position, an operating member movable by partial rotation on one direction from a neutral position to force the bolt into an unlatching position and movable by partial rotation in the opposite direction from the neutral position to a locking position in which it places a positive stop in the way of the bolt so that the bolt cannot be withdrawn from the latching position, a key-operated lock of the cylinder or barrel type having a key-released-and-operated member, the key being movable at only one position of the member, and a lost motion connection between the key-operated member and the operating member whereby the operating member may be rotated in each direction by the key and the key may be removed when the operating member is in either the neutral position or the locking position. According to the invention, the angular lost motion is substantially equal to the angular movement of the operating member between the neutral and locking positions. As shown, each of a pair of levers 12 and 13 pivoted within a lock casing 10 is movable from a neutral position to a locking position to lock a latch bolt 11 and in the other direction to retract -the latch bolt. The lever 13 is movable by means of a handle 15 and the lever 12 is provided on the free end of its squaresection operating spindle 17 with a pair of diagonally opposed square stops 18 between which is located a flat rotatable blade 21 of a cylinder lock 20, the arrangement permitting 90 degrees of lost motion between the blade and the spindle 17. In another arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown) the levers 12 and 13 are replaced by a single lever on a square section spindle to one end of which a handle is attached and the other end of which carries the stops 18. The invention includes the arrangement in which the stops are provided on the key-operated member and the blade is on the handle operated member. Specification 679,564 is referred to.
