Abstract
786,584. Operating clutches. ROVER CO., Ltd. June 5, 1956 [June 27, 1955], No. 18468/55. Class 80 (2). In a motor vehicle with change-speed gearing controlled by clutches engaged hydraulically by fluid supplied from an engine-driven pump c, emergency means for engaging one of the clutches so that the engine can be started by towing or pushing the vehicle, comprises an hydraulic accumulator a with a spring-loaded piston h which is normally secured in a position in which its spring i is stressed but which can be released by a driver-operated lever or pedal p so as to allow it to discharge sufficient liquid to engage the clutch. The accumulator a is supplied at b by the pump c past a non-return valve e and is connected to the clutch actuator d through a conduit b<SP>1</SP> with a spring-closed valve f. The piston h has a circumferential groove co-operating with balls or keys k movable radially in the wall of the accumulator but normally held in engagement with the groove j, so as to limit the movement of the piston, by a spring-loaded slidable sleeve m. When the emergency arises, valve f is opened by a push member g and sleeve m is moved to the right by the lever or pedal p so that a groove q in the sleeve permits the keys k to move outwards and free the piston h.
