Abstract
786,467. Universal joints. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1955 [Dec. 21, 1954], No. 36008/55. Class 80 (2). A coupling adapted to allow of slight angular misalignment and to transmit axial thrust is particularly applicable to the connection of the turbine rotor shaft 26 of a gas turbine engine to the compressor shaft 18. The coupling comprises a sleeve 40 in splined connection at 42 and 44 with the shafts 18 and 26 respectively for the transmission of torque and a series of interfitting flexible spring discs 66, 68, 70, 72 and 74 located between sleeves 46 and 62 for transmitting axial thrust. The spring discs interfit by means of annular grooves and flanges and the end discs engage radial flanges 64 and 96 on the sleeves 62 and 46, these sleeves being secured to shafts 26 and 18 respectively. The arrangement of spring discs prevent relative lateral movement and consequently relative axial displacement of the two shafts, but allows a slight angular displacement provided by the flexing of the discs.
