Abstract
786,416. Vacuum deep-drawing of thermoplastic sheet material. HYDRO-CHEMIE AKT.-GES. Oct. 5, 1956 [Oct. 5, 1955], No. 30455/56. Addition to 781,979. Class 87(2). In the parent Specification the maximum vacuum is not applied to the mould 2 until the sheet material 17 is about to make contact with the mould. The present in. vention incorporates the additional step that the vacuum is cut off from the mould only after the moulded sheet material has cooled down enough to become solid. This ensures that minute details of the mould surface are reproduced on the moulded sheet material. The Figure shows apparatus comprising an evacuating pump 10 which withdraws air from the mould 2 by way of pipe 8, valve 9 and ducts 3 in the mould. A branch pipe 11 containing a valve 12 leads from pipe 8 to a vacuum container 13. Another branch pipe 14 leads from pipe 8 via valve 16 to a compressed-air container 15. Operation. (1) Valves 9 and 16 being closed, and valve 12 being open, the pump 10 operates to maintain a substantial vacuum in container, whilst the sheet 17, which is clamped on the mould by a hinged frame 18, is heated by an electric resistance heater 19. (2) The heater 19 is switched off and valve 9 is opened, whereby the sheet is sucked into the mould. (3) Just before the sheet makes contact with the mould the valve 12 is closed, as in the parent Specification, to give a high vacuum between the mould and the sheet. (4) This high vacuum is maintained until the sheet is cool and solid. (5) Valve 9 is closed, frame 18 is swung away and valve 16 is opened, whereby compressed air forces the sheet away from the mould surface. Immediately after valve 9 has been closed, valve 12 is opened to re-establish the vacuum in container 13. The valves 9, 12 and 16 may be operable manually or automatically. If they are operated mechanically, (a) the valve 9 may open a pre-determined time after the heater 19 has been switched in; (b) valve 12 may be closed either a pre-determined time after valve 9 has been opened, or in response to an increased pressure in container 13 ; (c) opening of valve 16, closing of valve 9 and re-opening of valve 12 may be time-controlled to occur a predetermined period after the opening of valve 9, this period being sufficient for the moulded sheet to cool and solidify. The mould may be concave, as shown, or convex.
