Abstract

Ergot alkaloids and other derivatives of lysergic and isolysergic acids containing a -CO-N< group and a 9 : 10 double bond are exposed to light in aqueous solution, whereby the elements of water are added across the double bond. The process may need 3-40 hours at 2-60 DEG C. Preferably the starting material is dissolved in glacial acetic acid and this solution diluted with water. The products can be isolated by standard methods, e.g. chromatography, and are usually obtained in two isomeric forms. Examples show the treatment of ergotamine, ergotaminine, ergometrine, lysergic acid diethylamide, lysergic acid hydrazide, isolysergic acid hydrazide, lysergic acid butanolamide, ergosine, ergocornine, ergocristine and ergocryptine.
