Abstract

786,101. Locking devices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 24, 1955, No. 18272/55. Class 80 (3). [Also in Group XXXIX] A locking device for preventing movement of one member relative to another due to shock whilst normally allowing relative movement is particularly applicable to a telephone handpiece 15 supported in two spring-loaded clips 12 on a framework 4. The clips 12 are loaded by springs 11 acting through rods 9 which have enlarged collars 8 thereon. These collars 8 are adapted to move into bores 6 of locking members 1 to allow the clips 12 to move into the dotted positions for removal of the handpiece when desired. The locking members 1 are suspended by a number of springs 2 to the frame 4 as shown at the top of the Figure or by a coiled spring 22 tapered towards its middle as shown at the bottom of the Figure. In the event of a shock the members 1 are displaced transversely to the rods 9 to move the bores 6 out of alignment with the collars 8 and thus prevent the rods from moving against the springs 11. The two separate devices are arranged at 90 degrees to respond to shocks in any direction. A single device only may be provided when locking of a member by shock in one plane only is desired. Various different arrangements of two devices are also described.
