Abstract
786,067. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CATES, J. Aug. 12, 1955 [Aug. 20, 1954], No. 24320/54. Class 38 (4). An electric circuit arrangement for operating from an A.C. supply one or a plurality of series-connected gas- or vapour-filled electric discharge lamps 3 comprises two long terminals 1, 2 between which the lamp is arranged to be connected, two input terminals 5, 6 for connection to the supply, a first inductor 7 connected between one lamp and one input terminal 1, 5 and a second inductor 8 serially connected with a capacitor 10 between the two input terminals 5, 6, the latter also being connected to the other lamp terminal 2; the two inductors are arranged with magnetic leakage between them on a common magnetic core 9 and in flux opposition when considered with reference to a current flowing through them in series, and the values of the inductors and of capacitor are such that the circuit is non- resonant at the supply frequency for which it is designed and the impedance of the capacitor 10 is substantially greater than that of the second inductor 8 at the said frequency whereby the starting voltage applied between the lamp terminals 1, 2 is greater than the supply voltage applied between the input terminals 5, 6 by reason only of phase relationships of voltages across the inductors and the capacitor. The inductors 7, 8 may have the same number of turns, and to prevent flicker at low ambient temperatures a resistor, not shown, may be serially connected on either side of the capacitor 10 or a tungsten filament lamp may be shunted across inductor 8. The lamp may be a L.P.M.V. fluorescent lamp and may have an earthed starting strip 4, and if instead of the cold-start electrodes shown it has preheatable electrodes these may be heated by one or two secondary windings wound over the inductor 8, in the former case the other electrode being heated by being connected in series between the capacitor 10 and input terminal 6. Inductor designs and circuit component parameters are described in the Specification. Specification 565,604 is referred to.
