Abstract

A process for the manufacture of synthetic rubber-like materials by a two-stage interaction of a polyester or polyesteramide and a polyisocyanate or mixtures of any such reactants wherein in the first stage of the reaction an amount of polyisocyanate sufficient to produce only a low molecular weight polymer which attains on heating a maximum Williams Plasticity Number between 200 and 550 is used and in the second stage a further amount of polyisocyanate is added, is characterized in that in the second stage there is also added a substance that will react with a polyisocyanate to form a thermolabile adduct. The substance is suitably added in the proportion of from 1/2 mol. to 2 1/4 mol. per mol. of polyisocyanate added in the second stage. The polyester or polyesteramide and the polyisocyanate may be those specified in Specification 767,578, monochlorophenylene - 2 : 4 - diisocyanate also being referred to. In the first stage usually 0.9 to 1.5, and more generally 1.0 to 1.3, isocyanate groups are added to the reaction mixture for each isocyanate-reactive end-group in the polyester or polyesteramide. In the second stage the polyisocyanate may be one as used in the first stage or may be for example an aromatic triisocyanate such as triphenylmethane-4 : 41 : 411-triisocyanate. As substance which form a thermolabile adduct (by which is meant a compound containing not more than one free isocyanate group which on heating to 100 DEG to 180 DEG C. liberates a compound containing at least two free isocyanate groups in the molecule) there may be used phenol, succinimide, mercaptobenzthiazole, caprolactam, phenyl - b - naphthylamine, diphenylamine and triphenylcarbinol. In examples, an ethylene glycol/adipic acid polyester is reacted with naphthylene-1 : 5-diisocyanate to give a rubber-like material of Williams Plasticity Number 511 at 82.5 DEG C. This material is dried and then milled with (1) mercaptobenzthiazole; (2) phenol; (3) succinimide; (4) diphenylamine; (5) p-nitrophenol; and (6) o-nitrophenol, followed in each case by milling with naphthalene-1 : 5-diisocyanate. The mixture may be cured into moulded articles immediately or after prolonged storage. Specification 553,733, [Group IV], also is referred to.
