785,746. Liquid electrode cells. BADISCHE ANILINE- & SODA-FABRIK AKT.-GES. Feb. 3, 1956 [Feb. 3, 1955], No. 3413/56. Class 41. An electrolytic cell for the electrolysis of an alkali metal chloride solution employing a liquid cathode, e.g. mercury, which flows in an inclined trough 2 having a flat, flexible bottom, has a plurality of adjustable supports 14, 17, 20 attached to the underside of the trough 2 and spaced intermediate the ends thereof, whereby unevenness in the bottom of the trough may be corrected. The supports, which are arranged in pairs, comprise two threaded rods 14, 17 pinned at 15, 18 to plates 16, 19 secured respectively to the trough 2 and to a pipe 6 which is the denuder. A threaded sleeve 20 connects the rods 14, 17 and enables their separation to be adjusted. The trough 2, which contains graphite anodes, may be of sheet metal, e.g. iron or aluminium, or a plastic material, e.g. polyvinylchloride, in which case conducting plates are inserted in the bottom of the trough as current leads. The trough may be 150 cms. wide, 1500 cms. long and 0.4 cms. thick and the pairs of supports may be arranged at intervals of 40 cms. A pump may assist circulation of the mercury and amalgam.
