Abstract

An aqueous nickel plating bath comprises nickel ions, hypophosphite ions and an amount of a thio compound stabilizing additive such as not substantially to reduce the plating rate of the bath and such as to inhibit random decomposition of the bath, the thio-compound being non-catalytic towards the oxidation of the hypophosphite and being stable and substantially insoluble in the bath. The thio-compound may be a sulphide of Pb, Cu, Bi, Sn, Se, Te, thiocyanate, thiophosphate, xanthate, aerofloet, thio-acid, thioamine such as thiocarbanilide or thiourea, organic sulphide, mercaptan or thioalcohol, diphenyl thiocarbazide, mercaptobenzothiazole or a thiocarbamate. Nickel coatings may be formed on Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, Be, Ge, Al, C, V, Mo, W, Cr, Se, Ti, U. Specifications 761,062 and 785,693 are referred to.
