Abstract

785,435. Wafer sandwich making. BAKER PERKINS, Ltd. March 28, 1956 [March 29, 1955], No. 9175/55. Class 28 (1). Wafer sandwiches are made by feeding creamed wafer sheets, creamed surfaces uppermost, on a conveyer successively against a stop, lifting the sheet or sheets from the conveyer and then lowering it or them on to a further sheet so as to build up a sandwich, incorporating a dry wafer on top of the sandwich, and withdrawing the stop periodically to allow a completed sandwich to be fed forward. In the machine as shown, which may form part of plant as described in Specification 785,433, having a selecting and marshalling unit as described in Specification 785,434, sandwiches (as shown four-wafer sandwiches) are each made from a dry wafer, fed by selecting conveyer 10 to wafer fingers 12, and three creamed wafers fed successively on conveyer 15 to stop 17. When the first creamed wafer reaches stop 17 the dry wafer has been dropped from fingers 12 to fingers 13 which open to drop it on to sheet 16a which is resting on a table 18. Table 18 rises to lift sheets 11, 16a upwards until fingers 13 close on to them and hold them. Table 18 then descends to receive sheet 16b and the process is continued until the sandwich is completed. An electric motor 21 drives shaft 22 through chain and sprocket drive 23 and shaft 22 drives shaft 24 through gears 25, 26. Shaft 24 drives the shaft 27 of conveyer 15 through chain and sprocket drive 28. Stop 17 and table 18 are bifurcated to allow them to move up and down in relation to conveyer 15 which comprises three belts 29. Shaft 24 drives cam-shaft 19 through gears 30, 31 and shaft 19 drives cam-shaft 20 through gears 32, not shown, and 33. Shaft 19 carries cams 34, 35, 36, 37, 38 actuating respectively metering gate 39, stop 17, table 18, fingers 13 and levellers 65. Cam 34 engages a follower 40 carried on a bell-crank 41 coupled to the gate 39 by a link 44 so as to ensure that the creamed wafers are suitably spaced. Cam 35 engages a follower on lever 43 which with lever 41 is pivoted at 42 and is coupled to stop 17 by a pin 46. In making a four-wafer sandwich, stop 17 is prevented from descending, during the first two rotations of shaft 19, by a trip member 47 cooperating with a cam 49 on shaft 20. Cam 36 engages follower 50 on a pivoted lever 51 coupled by pin 52 to the table 18 and during the first two cycles the table 18 is lifted by spring 53. During the third cycle a trip member 54 with a follower 55 engaging a cam 56 on shaft 20 is moved into position to prevent lever 51 from lifting table 18. A pair of fingers 13 connected by a ledge 58 is provided on each side of the machine, each pair being fixed to a rod 57 journalled in the machine framework. Rods 57 carry arms 64 connected by links 63 to a pivoted lever 61 with a follower 60 engaging cam 37. End levellers 65 are attached to rods 66 journalled in the machine framework and coupled by a linkage of arms 67 and a link 68. Arm 69 fixed to one of the rods 66 is coupled by a link 70 to a lever 71 with a follower 72 coacting with cam 38. Dry wafer fingers 12 are mounted in two pairs connected by ledges 76, fixed to rods 77 journalled in the machine framework at right angles to rods 57. Rods 77 are connected by a linkage of arms 78 and link 79, one of the rods 77 carrying an arm 80 coupled by a link 81 to a lever 82 with a follower 83 engaging a cam 84 on shaft 20. After passing stop 17 the blocks are carried on a belt 85 and subjected to pressure by an upper belt 87 urged downwards by springs 88.
