Abstract
Petroleum fractions are sweetened by oxidizing the mercaptans therein in the presence of a chelate organo-metallic compound, and either a lead salt or an alkali metal plumbite. The chelate compound may be formed in situ in the fraction, in which case an alkali, e.g. caustic soda, may be added to neutralize acid generated in the reaction. Chelate compounds referred to are cobalt bis-(disalicylal ethylene di-imine) and cobalt disalicylal 1,2-propylene di-imine, which may be prepared from the amine and cobalt nitrate, naphthenate, or acetyl-acetonate. The chelate may be added as an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic dispersion, for example in an aqueous solution of "Teepol" (Registered Trade Mark), or may be dissolved in a solvent such as methanol. Lead salts referred to are salts of organic acids such as naphthenates, phenolates, cresolates and mercaptides. Alternatively, the process may be carried out in apparatus made partly of lead, in which case part of the lead, in the presence of aqueous alkali, is converted into plumbite. Examples are given of the treatment of a mixture of cracked and straight run petroleum spirit, straight-run petroleum spirit, kerosene and gas oil. The process may be operated continuously. Specifications 701,443, 767,587 and 782,052 are referred to.
