Abstract
A process for extracting sodium vanillinate from an aqueous liquor containing the same, together with other dissolved solids, using a propanol as the liquor-immiscible preferential solvent for the sodium vanillinate, comprises mixing the aqueous liquor with an aqueous propanol in such proportions as to form a two-phase extraction system in which the raffinate has a solids content of 20 to 40 per cent by weight and propanol (100 per cent basis) is present in an amount equal to at least 30 per cent of the combined weight of the extract and the raffinate. Autoclaved liquors, the aqueous alkaline sodium vanillinate-containing liquors obtained from the oxidative treatment in an autoclave of crude lignin-containing liquors, e.g. waste sulphite liquor, may be employed as starting materials. The process may be carried out in a series of batchwise stages or continuously in countercurrent processes. In examples: a crude sodium vanillinate obtained by autoclaving waste sulphite liquor, to which caustic soda has been added, under oxidizing conditions, is concentrated and treated with 80 per cent propanol to extract 78 per cent of the sodium vanillinate contained in the autoclaved liquor (1) whilst a similar process is carried out in a countercurrent, five stage, batchwise system using 78 per cent isopropanol (2). Specification 490,646, [Group IV], is referred to.
