In a brush of the type in which the bristles are held in a channel form back beneath an elongated lognitudinal retaining element held in position by projections from the side of the channel, the projections are formed on a rim turned inwardly from the edge of the channel onto the inner side wall. As shown the projections are in the form of teeth punched from the edges of a metal strip before the edges are turned in. Preferably the teeth on opposite walls are staggered and those on one wall are longer than on the other. The channel back may be made of steeel, stainless steel, copper, brass or aluminium and the bristles may be of crimped wire, nylon coated wire, nylon monofilaments, tampico fibre or horse hair. The teeth may alternatively be welded to the inturned edge or may be formed as dimples on the inturned edge. When the strip is circularized the folded in edges of the strip tend to swing towards the wire and thus to increase the grip on the bristles.
