Abstract

782,119. Protective cut-out arrangements. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Oct. 3, 1955 [Oct. 14, 1954], No. 29649/54. Class 38 (5). In an earth leakage protective arrangement, a transformer 4 has a centre-tapped secondary winding with its ends connected to the casing of a protected apparatus 1 and its centre tapping connected to earth 7 through a current-sensitive device which is actuated in the event of an insulation breakdown of the apparatus 1 to give an indication or effect a control. In the arrangement shown, earth fault current flowing through earth leads 10, 11, the secondary winding and a relay 6 to earth 7 opens the contacts of the relay 6 to de-energize the closing coil of a contactor 3 to interrupt the supply to the apparatus 1. Current normally circulates from the secondary winding through the coils of relays 8, 9, the leads 10, 11 and the casing of the apparatus so that should either earth connection become defective relays 8 and 9 are de-energized to open their contacts in series with the contactor closing coil and so open the contactor. The casing of the apparatus may also be connected through a further earth lead 12, a test switch 13 and the trip coil 14 of an earth leakage circuit-breaker 5 to an auxiliary earth 15, so that should a potential build up on the casing of the apparatus, the circuit-breaker 5 is tripped open. This opens the supply to the transformer 4 and to the closing coil of the contactor 3 which opens to disconnect the apparatus 1.
