Abstract

782,074. Magnetic tests. BARTLETT, E. E. [Personal representative of BARTLETT, C. (deceased)]. June 24, 1955 [March 25, 1954], No. 8759/54. Class 37. Apparatus for detecting cracks or flaws in a ferro-magnetic body by applying magnetic suspension liquid thereto comprises a frame, at least two upright supports on said frame for supporting the body to be tested, a currentconducting coil around each said support, and means for applying a direct current to said coils. In the embodiment shown, a rectangular casing 1/2 made up of frame 1 and closure walls 2 contain a test liquid reservoir 17 and drain 16 leading from sink 14. A guideway 3 straddles the upper and open end of casing 1/2 and cores 6 of coils 8 register in guideway 3 with test specimen 11 bridging V-blocks 12 engaging sockets in cores 6. To suit test specimens 11 of different lengths one core 6 is adjustable along guideway 3 whilst contact lug 10 of corresponding coil 8 makes sliding contact with bus-bar 9 which connects the two coils 8. A pump 22 driven by motor 19 propels test liquid from reservoir 17 to spray nozzle 29 which is slidable along a stirrup 27 above test specimen 11. In testing specimen 11 the nozzle 29 is adjusted to the required position and test liquid is pumped from reservoir 17 and is sprayed on to the test specimen 11 by nozzle 29 and returned to the reservoir 17 via sink 14 and drain 16. At the same time 2-way switch 36 (see Fig. 3) connects D.C. to coils 8 via full-wave rectifier 35 whereby specimen 11 is magnetized and iron particles in the test liquid bridge any crack in the specimen 11. When testing is completed switch 36 is changed over so as to apply A.C. from transformer 33 to the coils 8 and thus demagnetize specimen 11 and allow iron particles to drop off. The stirrup 27 may be swivelled away from the apparatus to facilitate replacement of test specimen 11. The Provisional Specification states that A.C. may be applied as a pre-testing step to remove any residual magnetism from the test specimen.
