Abstract
A flux for use in soldering aluminium and possessing a melting point and a solubility for surface oxide on aluminium below 250 DEG C., consists of the product of fusing to homogeneity a mixture of aluminium chloride and an alkali metal chloride (Na, K, or Li), the molar proportion of AlCl3 in the AlCl5 alkali metal chloride mixture being between 52 and 82 per cent. It is produced by covering a mass of solid AlCl3 in a melting vessel with solid alkali metal chloride, heating to at least 300 DEG C. to form a clear homogeneous melt, cooling the melt and comminuting the resulting solid. The flux may be mixed with any conventional tin-lead or zinc-base solder e.g. a powder mixture of 10-15 per cent flux and 90-85 per cent solder may be moistened with carbon tetrachloride to form a paste for direct application to the aluminium, or it may be used as the core of a hollow rod of solder or the sheath of a rod of solder.
