Abstract

781,033. Electromechanical filters. COLLINS RADIO CO. Aug. 15, 1955 [Nov. 17, 1954], No. 23463/55. Class 40 (8). The vibrating system of an electromechanical filter comprises a series of discs 43-48 supported at their peripheries by wires 42 which are attached at either end to a pair of inactive discs 37, 39. The discs 37, 39 are attached to input and output coils 22, 23 enclosed within tubes 19, 21. A magnetostrictive rod 52, e.g. of nickel-iron alloy, passes axially through the coils and the vibrating system and is attached, e.g. by welding, to the centres of the active discs 43-48. The wire is arranged to pass freely through central holes in the inactive discs 37, 39. Magnetic bias may be applied to the coils 22, 23 by means of permanent magnets 53, 54. In a modification, the supporting wires 42 are replaced by a cylinder which entirely encloses the discs. Specification 733,281 is referred to.
