Abstract
780,974. Extracting uranium. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 24, 1955 [March 5, 1954], No. 6585/54. Class 82(1) Uranium is produced by mixing uranium tetrafluoride with magnesium, compacting the mixture to raise its bulk density e.g. to at least 3 grams./c.c. and rapidly heating the mixture to the temperature of initiation of the reaction, e.g. 800-1000‹C. Preferably the initiation of the reaction should be within 100 minutes of commencing heating. The Figure shows a reactor comprising a steel cylinder 1, an inner container formed of a mild steel upper portion 12 and stainless steel lower portion 13 fastened together by a flange and containing two graphite sleeves 9 and 10 above a catchpot 11. The reactants are compressed, e.g. under 8-10 tons per square inch, to pellets of such shape that they can be placed in the inner container as superposed rings. The reactor is then placed in a furnace which has already been heated e.g. to 950‹C.
