Class 120(2) A thread guide assembly for use in a centrifugal can spinning frame comprises a tubular thread guide shaped to project at its lower or outlet end into a centrifugal can mounted on the frame, and means for imparting a relative reciprocating movement between the thread guide and the can, the outer wall of the thread guide, at least at its end which projects into the can, being rotatably mounted so that it can be rotated by the revolving spinning can in the same direction as the can. In the construction shown a tubular thread guide 5 is inserted in the neck 101 of a spinning can 1 and is idly mounted on ball or like bearings 7 fastened in a vertically reciprocated support bar 6. The inside of the thread guide 5 is provided with a friction surface in the form of a coreless helical rib 8 which serves for smoothing the thread during its spinning and for keeping it centrally disposed inside the guide tube. The thread guide 5 during normal spinning does not revolve but is only reciprocated. If however, there is a knot or bulging portion in the sliver fed to the guide 5 which cannot pass freely through the guide the guide tube 5 is caused to rotate with the spinning can 1 in the same direction and thus prevents the coiled thread G from uncoiling and re-winding on the thread guide 5. In a second embodiment the thread guide consists of a pair of coaxial tubes the outer one. only of which is rotatably mounted. Braking means may be applied to the tube so as to hold it against rotation during normal spinning. Instead of helical friction surface 8 protuberances may be provided on the inside of the tube to act as smoothing means.
