Abstract
780,688. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. LORY, J. Nov. 10, 1955 [Nov. 16, 1954], No. 32197/55. Class 40 (2). In a magnetic tape or wire apparatus in which a friction jockey pulley 7 forms a permanent driving connection between a disc 2 on a reversible motor shaft 13 and a similar disc 8 on a capstan shaft 12, the jockey pulley 7 is automatically moved to engage one or other disc 3, 5 carrying the spools 19, 22, respectively, according to the direction of rotation of the motor shaft 13. The jockey pulley 7 is enabled to be moved laterally from one position to the other by means of enlarged holes 27 in the triangular plate 26 on which it is mounted. Permanent driving connection between jockey pulley 7 and the discs 2, 8 is established by lateral spring- loading of the motor 1. During a normal transducing operation the wire or tape 21 passes around the capstan 9 against which it is pressed by a pressure roller 10, but during a fast forward or rewinding operation the tape or wire is removed from between the capstan and pressure roller and passes direct from spool to spool.
