Abstract
Ethylene is prepared in a yield of 60 per cent or more by the thermal cracking of liquid hydrocarbons in which the ethylene is removed, and fresh quantities of liquid hydrocarbon added to the mixture in the reaction zone and the whole recirculated through the reaction zone after removing the ethylene therefrom. The initial hydrocarbons may be diesel oil, kogasin, the hydrocarbon oil derived from the catalytic hydrogenation of CO or slack wax and the process may be carried out in hollow tubes or in large-capacity reactors with or without solid or moving contact masses such as oxides of the second, third, fourth and sixth groups of the periodic system especially aluminium oxide, magnesium-aluminium silicate, magnesium-aluminium molybdate, and potassium-magnesium silicate. In a typical example, a diesel oil of density 0.84 was injected at the rate of 10 kgs. per hour together with 16.5 kgs. of recycle oil into a tube maintained at 750-800 DEG C. by external heating. After running for one hour the ethylene and hydrogen were selectively separated by adsorption on active carbon and the remainder recycled. At the end of 24 hours 67 per cent ethylene had been produced.
