Abstract
779,929. Forging socket - head screws. LAFLEUR, A. G., and MARECHAL, A. June 17, 1955 [June 28, 1954], No. 17583/55. Class 83 (4). A socket is formed in the head of an unthreaded screw blank by supporting the latter on the underface of its head only in a die 11, forming the socket by a punch 5 and then ejecting the socketed blank from the die by an ejector 15 which moves into contact with the inner end of the blank only after the punch begins to recede. The punch 5 is mounted on a reciprocating slider 3 actuated by an eccentric 6 on the main shaft 8. The latter carries a flywheel 43 and is driven through V-belts 42 from an electric motor. The headed blanks 14 are allowed to fall individually down a vertical feed channel 18, Fig. 5, adapted to be closed at its upper end by a sliding gate 17 connected to a slide member 26. The lower end of the channel 18 intersects a horizontal channel 19 aligned with the bore 13 of the die 11. The outlet end of this channel 19 is closable by a retractable stop 21, Fig. 6 (not shown). Spring- biased gripping fingers 24, 25 are pivotally mounted on the slide member 26 which is actuated by an axial cam 53 on the shaft 8, through a lever 47 and link 46. The cam profile is such that the fingers 24, 25 first grip the blank 14 whilst it is pressed against the stop 21; the latter is then withdrawn by means of a cam 55 on the shaft 8, through a rod 58, lever 62, shaft 63, lever 66 and rod 22 which carries the stop 21. Thereafter the fingers are again moved to feed the blank into alignment with the die bore into which it is pushed by the punch 5. After the socketing operation, the ejector 15 is actuated by a cam 71 on the shaft 8, through a pivoted link 73, rod 75, adjustable link 78 and lever 81. The rod 58 and the link 73 carry roller followers 56, 72 respectively which are held by springs against their respective cams 55, 71.. The sockets may be of cross-like, hexagon, or square section. The blank is subsequently screw threaded.
