Abstract
779,456. Thermocouples. LAND PYROMETERS, Ltd. July 4, 1955 [July 20, 1954], No. 21124/54. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XX] The temperature of a gas is determined by drawing a sample of the gas through a tube 12 (Fig. 1) containing a thermocouple 13 which is covered by a refractory shield consisting of a ceramic cylinder 25 with a central, axial passage 26a for locating the thermocouple 13, surrounded by a series of parallel passages 26 for the gas, the shield reducing the heat transfer by radiation between the thermocouple and the surroundings. The complete assembly is covered by a water jacket 20, giving protection against overheating and mechanical shock. Reserve lengths of the thermocouple wires 16 may be stored on reels 18a at the cold end of the pyrometer.
