Abstract

778,955. Coating paper webs. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Champion Paper & Fibre Co.). April 20, 1954, No. 11329/54. Classes 96 and 140. A paper web 21 is coated by a roll 22, e.g with a rubber covering 23 to which is applied an excess of mixture from a pond 26 maintained in agitation by rolls 30, 31. The excess is wiped off the roll 22 by a doctor rod or roll 61 driven slowly in either direction. The other surface may be coated likewise, by a roll 24, 25. Coatings may be applied to finished paper, or to paper being made e.g. after partial drying or after calendering. The rolls 30, 31 may have micrometer screw adjustment using wedges and springs. The doctor roll may be chromiumplated &c. and may be <SP>1</SP>/ 8 inch to several inches in diameter. It may be supported in a holder of laminated phenolic resin &c. which may be slotted to make it flexible, and may be flexed by a series of adjustment screws across the machine and may be weight- or spring-loaded to bear against the applicator roll 22 which may be driven at adjustable speed ; the rolls 30, 31 being driven from the roll 22.
