Abstract
778,590. Testing soil in situ. MENARD, L. F. A. Jan. 17, 1956 [Jan. 19, 1955], No. 1515/56. Class 106 (2). Apparatus for soil-testing comprises a cylindrical diametrally deformable cell of a diameter corresponding to the diameter of a drill-hole, and means for inflating the cell with a fluid and for indicating the pressure and volume of the liquid within the cell. To guard against end-effects the cell is divided into a central measuring section 1 and two end-sections 2, 3 each section having a central rigid axial tube 4, 5, 6 provided at each end with rigid annular collars 7 supporting an outer tubular deformable membrane 8, 9, 10, the cells being clamped together by tie-bolts 11. As shown, one pump p and gauge m is provided for the central section 1 and another pump p and gauge m being provided with a common duct t to the two end-sections 2, 3. Fluid reservoirs connected to each pump circuit indicate the volume of fluid inside the corresponding sections.
