Abstract
778,291. Chucks. GLEASON WORKS. July 22, 1954 [Aug. 3, 1953], No. 34795/55. Divided out of 778,290, [Group XXIII]. Class 83 (3). A machine for forming or testing gears comprises chuck-means, including a draw-rod 88, extending through the spindle to secure a gear thereon, and a pair of elements 107, 108, movable as a unit axially of the spindle to engage abutments 99a, 105 connected to the spindle and rod to move the rod axially. The spindle 24 runs in bearings, the races 74, 75 of which are engaged by sleeves 77, 79 screwed together. The bearings can be preloaded by rotating an eccentric-pin 81 which turns the sleeve 79. The gear P is held against an arbor 84 by a rod 85 gripped in a collet 86 urged rearwardly by springs 92 within a pulley 99. To release the gear, the spring-pressure is relieved by rotation of a handle 93. The collet is adjusted axially by a screwed-bush 94 and the spring-pressure is adjusted by a bush 95. To prevent the force of the springs 92 being transmitted to the bearings, rotation of the handle 93 initially moves a sleeve 107 rearwardly against the force of a spring 114. When the sleeve has engaged a flange 99a on the spindle, continued rotation of the handle 93 presses a flange 111 against the pin 105 connected, by members 96, 94, to the rod 88 to move it forwardly. Rotation of the handle 93 to unclamping position is limited by engagement of dogs 115. A thermoplastic plunger 116 engages the rotatable clamping- parts to deaden vibration.
