Abstract
Magnesium oxide, hydroxide, or substances containing said compounds such as calcined dolomite or magnesite, are reacted in aqueous suspension with carbon dioxide, or gases containing carbon dioxide, while maintaining a pH between 7.3 and 9.3; the carbonate hydrate reaction product is separated and dried, if necessary, below 200 DEG C., generally below 130 DEG C. and preferably 70 DEG -120 DEG C. The reaction is preferably carried out between 35 DEG and 55 DEG C. to produce the very active trihydrate since the pentahydrate forms below 10 DEG C. and the monohydrate above 55 DEG C.
