A machine for lasting or shaping footwear comprises clamp means for gripping the periphery of the insole or sole around the toe and preferably also for supporting the underside thereof, and a ram member for pushing the forepart of the last into position in the footwear whilst the toe portion is gripped. The portion to be gripped is constituted by the sole and/or insole together with the out turned upper material in the case of veldtshoen or the welt in the case of welted shoes, or, in the case of slip lasted shoes, by an extra portion which is left on the upper and insole around the toe and later trimmed off. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the support block 3 mounted on a pillar has a plate 4 which is adjustably positionable by a handle 5, and a hinged plate 6, with a cut-away portion slotted at 7 to receive interchangeable wiper plates 10, which is lowered by means of a treadle to clamp the toe margin between plates 4 and 6. With the treadle depressed the forepart 17 of the last, separated from or in broken relation to the rear part, is forced home by a bar 13 which has slots 14 to engage the shoe and is moved rearwardly by double-acting pneumatic cylinders 11. In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the shoe is positioned by pegs 20 inserted in holes 19 in plate 4, bolts 21 limit upward movement of piston rods 12, and an abutment bar 23 is pivoted to a bar 22 connecting the pistons by a bolt 24 passing through one of a series of holes 25. Bar 23, with a flat or V-shaped end, is swung into a fore-and-aft position manually and then pulled against the last by means of cylinders 11 which are actuated by means of handle 34. The arrangement is such that fluid is not admitted to cylinders 11 until the treadle actuating plate 6 is operated and bar 23 swung to operative position. A suitable pneumatic circuit is illustrated.
