Abstract

Compositions comprise a liquid furfuryl alcohol resin and a liquid phenol-aldehyde condensation product obtained by condensing formaldehyde and at least one mononuclear monohydric phenol in a molar proportion above 1 : 1, the ratio by weight of furfuryl alcohol resin to phenol-aldehyde condensation product ranging from 1.5 : 5.1 Polyvinyl acetals, e.g. polyvinyl butyral, propional, acetal and valeral (together with paraformaldehyde), polyacrylic or methacrylic acid and polyvinyl alcohol may also be present. Inert fillers, e.g. graphite, finely pulverized coke, silicon, silicon carbide, silicon dioxide, quartz, titanium dioxide and barium sulphate or chemically resistant resins, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polystyrene, polyisobutylene and polyethylene are further optional additions. The compositions may be used in solution to coat metals. Specified solvents are isopropanol, ethyl alcohol, acetone, butyl alcohol, sec.-butanol, methyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, ethyl propionate and butyl acetate.
