Abstract
777,673. Sound transmitting devices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 21, 1955, No. 30160/55. Class 40 (4). An earphone comprises a yoked magnet 1 with coils 3 to excite a rocking armature 4 which is attached at one end to a membrane 5 which is mounted with and bears peripherally against a perforated disc 6. The earphone is contained in a casing 8 closed by a perforated front plate 7 and is characterized by a damping disc 9 engaged peripherally between the disc 6 and the plate 7, the centre portion of the damping disc resting against a projection 12 on the disc 6. The damping disc, which is of metal foil, may or may not be perforated; if it is, the perforations are arranged with respect to those in disc 6 and plate 7 so that there is no direct path from an aperture in disc 6 to an aperture in plate 7. A projection 25 on the front plate 7 holds the disc 9 against the projection 12. A thin plastic membrane may be disposed between the damping disc 9 and the front of plate 7 to protect the earphone interior. The magnet, and terminals 22, are mounted on one side of a ring 24 the other side of which has a plane surface against which the membranes and discs are clamped by the front plate 7, a skirt portion of which is turned over the rear edge of the ring 24. The casing 8 is secured by a skirt 29 turned over the front edge of plate 7. A curve (not shown) of the frequency response of the earphone is given in which the perforations in the disc 6 have an area of 100 mm.<SP>2</SP> while those in the damping disc 9 and front plate 7 each have an area of 25 mm.<SP>2</SP>.
