Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of polyvinyl acetate are obtained by the catalytic polymerization of vinyl acetate in emulsion in the presence of polyvinyl acetate partially hydrolysed to at least 78 per cent and an alkali salt of polymethacrylic acid, e.g. the ammonium, sodium, potassium or triethanolamine salt. Catalysts specified are ammonium, sodium and potassium persulphates, peroxides and reduction-activation systems. Optional ingredients are alkalies, such as sodium carbonate, which ensure stability. In examples the ingredients are added continuously. The products are stable and of small particle size, e.g. 15 microns.
