Labels are fed from a reciprocating label stack 17b, Fig. 3, to an open-ended intermittentlyrotated pick-up box 18b having vertical apertures 90 in its sides which are gummed on either side of each aperture by gumming rollers 109 ; a continuously rotatable transfer member has a vertically depending suction pad 21b which moves into and out of the box 18b through the apertures 90 during dwells to remove a label 11 covering an aperture and, while holding it by suction, to bring the label tangentially into contact with a rotatable suction drum 9. Suction control means operating on the drum 9 and pad 21b permits transfer of the label 11 to the drum 9 where it is subsequently rolled on a bottle 10 fed on a conveyer 4 and rotated between the drum 9 and an arcuate presser guide 13. As shown, an additional assembly of pick-up box 18a, transfer pad 21a, label stack 17a and gumming rollers 109 also feeds gummed labels to the suction drum 9. In order to bring the label tangentially into contact with the drum 9, the face of the pad 21b is always maintained parallel to itself during its orbit 22b. After the labels have been transferred from the drum 9 to the bottles, an endless belt 15, Fig. 2, rolls the bottles along a resilient support 16 to ensure secure application of the labels. A detector device 114, Fig. 3, controls a solenoid 115a, Fig. 12 (not shown) associated with each label stack 17a. If a bottle is missing the solenoid fails to withdraw a latch 116, Fig. 12, which prevents movement of the label stack towards the pick-up box and no label is withdrawn,
