Abstract
776,854. Blasting fuzes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 2,1956 [Aug. 15, 1955], No. 23417/55. Class 9 (1). A ventless delay electric blasting cap comprises a casing 1 containing a base charge 2 and a primary charge 3 separated from the electric fuzehead 9 by a delay element which consists of a metal tube 6 closed at the base and containing a small charge 7 of primary explosive above which is the delay composition 8. The delay element is secured in the casing 1 so that on firing it is retained in the detonator. The delay element may be secured by crimping the tube 6 in the casing 1 or, as shown, the tube 6 may be placed in a tube 4 which contacts the charge 3 and is provided with a flash-hole 5. The tube 4 extends to the end of casing 1 and is crimped with it to a neoprene plug 10 surrounding the lead wires 11. The casing 1 may be Cu, Zn or alloys thereof and the tube 6 may be a Cu alloy or mild steel, while the tube 4 may be Cu, Cu alloy, mild steel, Zn or Zn alloy. In an example the base charge is tetryl and the primary charge an aluminium/lead azide/lead styphnate composition while the delay composition consists of lead dioxide and silicon (50/50) pressed at 18 tons/sq. in. into a mild steel tube. Potassium permanganate and antimony (36/64) may be used for the delay composition:
